Google Tag Manager

In short

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free Google tool for managing tracking codes and pixels in one place without editing your website's code for every change.

Also known as: GTM

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tag management system from Google. You install a container code on your website once, then manage all tracking tags, pixels and scripts from a web interface.

How does Google Tag Manager work?

GTM is built on three components:

  • Tags: the code that runs, for example the Meta Pixel or a Google Ads conversion tag.
  • Triggers: rules that decide when a tag fires, such as a page view, click or form submission.
  • Variables: dynamic values like order value, page URL or data from the dataLayer.

Changes are prepared in a workspace, tested in preview mode and then published as a new version. Technically this is classic client-side tracking: the browser loads the container and runs the tags.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free and widely used.
  • Very flexible, almost any tracking script can be added.
  • Versioning and preview mode.

Cons

  • Steep learning curve: triggers, variables and the dataLayer need technical understanding.
  • Clean event data often depends on a developer populating the dataLayer.
  • Containers grow over the years, and forgotten tags keep firing and distort data.
  • GTM requests run in the browser and are exposed to ad blockers.

For server-side tracking there is server-side GTM, which requires a separately hosted server container.

Example

An online store wants to report purchases to Meta and Google Ads. In GTM the team creates a trigger for the order confirmation page, reads the order value from the dataLayer and sets up one tag for Meta and one for Google. To make sure the tags only fire with consent, they also wire Google Consent Mode v2 to the cookie banner.

Tracking without Google Tag Manager using LeadSignal

LeadSignal is a simple alternative if you want conversion tracking without GTM. Instead of tags, triggers and variables, you add a single script and mark conversions with the visual event tool directly on your site. Consent, pixels and server-side delivery to Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok are built in, and LeadSignal works alongside an existing GA4 setup. Learn more in the guide to server-side tracking without GTM.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Tag Manager free?+

Yes, the web version of Google Tag Manager is free. Costs only appear with server-side GTM, because you have to host a server container on Google Cloud or with a provider like Stape.

Do I need Google Tag Manager for conversion tracking?+

No. GTM is one way to manage pixels and events, not a requirement. You can install pixels directly or use a tool that connects every platform through a single script.

Is Google Tag Manager GDPR compliant?+

GTM itself is just a container. What matters is which tags you load through it and whether they only fire after consent. That requires a clean connection to your cookie banner.
