Conversion tracking measures how many visitors complete a desired action after interacting with an ad, for example buying a product or submitting a form. The data is sent back to ad platforms such as Meta, Google Ads, LinkedIn or TikTok so they can evaluate and optimise your campaigns.
How does conversion tracking work?
A tracking snippet on your site detects the events you care about: a visit to the thank-you page, a click on "Buy now" or a form submission. For each one, an event is sent to the ad platform, usually as a standard event like Lead or Purchase, optionally with a conversion value and currency.
The platform links that event to the original ad click using cookies, click IDs such as the gclid, or hashed customer data. Events are delivered through a tracking pixel in the browser, through server-side tracking, or ideally both.
Why does conversion tracking matter?
Without conversion tracking you cannot tell which ads actually drive revenue, and metrics like ROAS or CPA are impossible to calculate. Even more important: Meta's and Google's algorithms optimise towards the conversions they can see. When data goes missing through signal loss, you pay for weaker delivery.
Common problems
- Events fire twice or not at all because pixels were installed incorrectly.
- Ad blockers and cookie limits swallow a share of conversions.
- Complex tag manager setups are hard to maintain without a developer.
If your numbers look off, Meta Pixel not tracking conversions covers the usual causes.
Example
A coaching business runs Meta ads to a landing page with a booking form. Every submission is reported to Meta as a Lead event worth 50 EUR. The business can see which ad set brings in the cheapest leads, and Meta can find more people who are likely to respond the same way.
